11/3/2009 - CARB fines 2 companies over $700,000 for diesel emissions violations

The California Air Resources Board hit two businesses with big fines for their alleged failure to comply with state rules. Commenting on one action, Mary Nichols, CARB Chairwoman, said the settlement shows that any business that “fails to take its responsibilities seriously or attempts to take shortcuts can expect to pay a high price for its actions.” Key Disposal, Inc., a Montebello company, was hit with $500,000 fine for not inspecting and not retrofitting some vehicles as required, and EDCO, a San Diego area-based trash-hauling company, was fined $219,500 for 2005 and 2006 violations relating to required emission inspections that had not been performed on some of its trucks.
